Q&A re: Foot Drop

Hi there!

I'm back with another Q&A! Our question today comes from someone in our MS community wondering about foot drop.

Question: "Have you seen where Bioness has helped with foot drop? Any particular exercises?"

Answer: There are many options for devices that can help with foot drop. AFO's, ankle/foot bands, and a few types of electrical stimulation devices are currently on the market. Two electrical stimulation devices are the Bioness and the Walk Aide. These devices use electrical stimulation to activate the nerves on the outer calf, which are responsible for lifting the foot up (and prevent your toes from dragging).

I have personally observed the Bioness & Walk Aide help some of my clients with MS to lift their foot up more as well as have more controlled walking. Sometimes, it even helps with bending the knee more. However, in other clients, there wasn't much improvement. It's hard to tell who these devices may work for and who is less likely to benefit. Luckily, both of these companies offer complimentary consultations so you have the opportunity to try it on and see if it helps! From there, you may decide to do a 2 week trial (this part costs $$) to see if this would be something you'd want to continue using. I'd suggest calling an orthotist near you to see if they have either of these devices, then schedule a free consult!

If you're a member of The MSing Link, make sure to check out our Guest Speaker call with Orthotist, Anne Rowell where she reviewed exactly how these devices work, who's an appropriate candidate, and other alternatives. As for exercises, there are many movements you can do to improve foot drop.

Option 1) Strengthen the weak muscles & stretch the tight muscles that causes foot drop. This video shows you how.

Option 2) Strengthen compensatory muscles. This video shows you how.
