Travel Tips for MS✈️

Jun 13, 2023

Hey there!

Having multiple sclerosis can add extra anxiety around traveling. I have had many clients feel as though traveling is simply off the table after their diagnosis, or after a bad flair, but it doesn't have to be that way. It takes a bit of extra planning, but it can be done!

I have compiled a list of top ten travel tips that can make life easier:

  1. Plan ahead: Research your destination, accommodations, and transportation options in advance to ensure accessibility.
  2. Notify the airline: Contact the airline ahead of time to request assistance and inform them of any special needs.
  3. Medications: Bring enough medication for the entire trip, and pack them in your carry-on luggage in case your checked luggage is lost.
  4. Mobility aids: Consider bringing a lightweight mobility aid such as a cane or walker, and check with your airline about any restrictions.
  5. Travel insurance: Purchase travel insurance that covers any unexpected medical expenses or emergencies.
  6. Comfortable clothing: Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing to prevent overheating or discomfort during long flights.
  7. Hydration: Stay hydrated by bringing a refillable water bottle and drinking plenty of fluids throughout the trip.
  8. Rest breaks: Take frequent rest breaks when traveling long distances to avoid fatigue and overexertion.
  9. Sun protection: Use sun protection such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to prevent skin damage and overheating.
  10. Enjoy the trip: Above all, remember to relax and enjoy the trip. Don't let your MS prevent you from having fun and experiencing new adventures.

I hope these tips are helpful, and can give you a bit of a plan that can help reduce any fears that may spring up around larger travel trips.

Best,

P.S.

1. Connect with me on YouTube - Subscribe to my Dr. Gretchen YouTube page where you will be able to find MS specific exercises, research updates, guest speakers, and MORE!

2. Join The MSing Link Community - The MSing Link is my online MS wellness program where you'll find video demonstrations and explanations of MS-specific exercises for strengthening, walking, balance, and flexibility. There are also videos for activity-specific movements such as getting into/out of bed or a car, standing up from the ground, sitting down with more control, stair climbing, etc. Since this program focuses on the whole person and not just exercise, we have monthly live guest speakers (ie: neurologists, podiatrists, nutritionists, etc.) and research updates.

3. Work with me privately - I offer wellness consults via Zoom. This is an opportunity for you to share your story with MS and your goals. I'm able to educate you on MS-specific exercises for walking, general mobility, transfers, and day-to-day activities (ie: getting into/out of a car, stair climbing, etc.). You can schedule a one-time call or you can schedule recurring calls - your choice. Oftentimes, people will schedule one of these calls prior to joining The MSing Link and/or one call every couple of months. Schedule here
