How to Measure Progress & Stay Motivated

Dec 26, 2023

In this episode of The MSing Link podcast, we explore the topic of measuring progress and staying motivated in the face of challenges. Living with MS can be tough, and it's easy to fall into a negative mindset when you're not seeing the progress you want. In this episode, we'll discuss a game-changing concept from the book "The Gap and the Gain" by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy. This book offers a new perspective on how we view our goals and achievements and can help us stay motivated.

The Gap vs. The Gain:

The central idea in "The Gap and the Gain" revolves around two mindsets: the Gap mindset and the Gain mindset. The Gap mindset is when you measure your progress by comparing yourself to an ideal or an end goal. This mindset focuses on how far you have to go to reach your ultimate goal. For example, if your goal is to speak fluently in a new language, and you're not there yet, you'll feel discouraged and in the Gap mindset.

On the other hand, the Gain mindset is all about measuring the gains you've made since you started working toward your goal. Instead of obsessing over the end result, you focus on where you began and how much you've improved. Using the language example, if you've learned 100 words and started from zero, this is progress to celebrate, which can inspire and motivate you to continue.

Why the Gain Mindset Works:

The authors argue that adopting a Gain mindset is crucial because it fosters a more positive and motivating energy. When you appreciate how far you've come, it fuels further progress. This mindset can help you stay consistent and motivated in your endeavors. It's all too common for people to give up when they're in the Gap mindset, feeling like they're not making any progress towards their ideal.

Practical Applications:

To make the transition from the Gap to the Gain mindset, there are two key strategies:

  1. Start with Relationships: Begin by observing your mindset in your daily interactions with others, such as your family, friends, and colleagues. Are you in the Gap or the Gain when dealing with them? By consciously choosing the Gain mindset in your relationships, you can practice and develop this mindset more effectively.
  2. Have a Pre-plan: Anticipate potential obstacles and have a plan to address them. This approach helps prevent decision fatigue and ensures you're prepared for any setbacks. For example, if you tend to get fatigued, create a modified plan for those days. By planning ahead, you reduce the chances of slipping into the Gap mindset.

Conclusion:

The Gap and the Gain is not about ignoring real-life situations but about changing your perspective. Whether you're pursuing personal goals, improving your mobility, or enhancing your relationships, recognizing your mindset as either Gap or Gain can be a game-changer. You can choose to view your progress from a Gain perspective, fostering motivation and positivity, making it more likely for you to reach your goals.

In the context of living with MS, it's essential to think about the long-term game. Quick results are possible, but consistency is key. A Gap mindset can lead to discouragement and ultimately hinder your progress. By adopting a Gain mindset, you'll appreciate your journey and keep moving forward. So, let's assess where your mindset is throughout the day and make a conscious effort to embrace the Gain.
