10 Types of Exercise and Which is Best for MS

Jan 19, 2024

The world of mobility aids and exercise can be vast and overwhelming, but fear not! I'm here to guide you through the key principles that underscore the effectiveness of these 10 exercises. It's not just about doing what seems right; it's about finding what's right for you—tailored to your strength, symptoms, and goals. After all, the true magic lies in consistency, and I'm here to empower you with insights that will make every exercise count.

In my  podcast episode of The MSing Link, I discussed the "10 Types Exercises and Which is Best for MS" I share a sneak peek with you so you can make sure you're implementing the right types of exercise, and don't worry—I'll spill the beans on how many of these exercises you should include in your routine.

✨The Golden Rule: Use What You'll Consistently Use✨

First and foremost, let's address the elephant in the room—the overwhelming array of tech, tools, and mobility aids. The truth is, the best one for you is the one you'll actually use. The same principle applies to exercise. The best form is the one you'll consistently do, aligning with your strength, symptoms, and goals.

1️⃣Strength Training

Bodyweight, dumbbells, barbells, or resistance bands—choose your weapon. The goal is simple: weight training for strengthening.

2️⃣Endurance

Beyond strength, focus on walking longer distances, tackling activities for extended periods, and conquering more stairs.

3️⃣Stretching

Embrace flexibility, release muscle tension, and bid farewell to tightness. Stretching is your ticket to a supple body.

4️⃣Balance

Essential for everyday activities, balance exercises prevent trips and falls. A must for stability during standing, walking, or weight shifting.

5️⃣Coordination

Whether walking or feeding yourself, coordination is key. Ensure your hand or foot goes where you want it, preventing awkward movements.

6️⃣Aerobic Exercise (Cardio)

Vital for mobility goals, aerobic exercises improve endurance and quality of movement. Don't forget to catch your breath!

7️⃣Speed

If you're aiming to move faster, focus on speed exercises. Ideal for enhancing your walking pace and overall agility.

8️⃣Daily Movement and Implementation

Bridge the gap between exercises and daily function. Ensure that your strengthened hip flexors and improved footdrop translate into practical improvements during everyday activities.

9️⃣High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Customize your high and low-intensity exercises. Anyone can benefit from HIIT with the right exercise selection. It's all about intervals!

🔟Classes

From yoga to specialized fitness classes, consider structured programs that encompass various exercise types. Understand what each class offers to tailor your routine effectively.

Now, let's address a common pitfall: the lack of exercise variety. Countless times, individuals experiencing pain despite consistent exercise have one thing in common—an over-reliance on a single form of exercise. The key to reaping benefits without pain lies in incorporating a variety of exercises.

🌟 Implementing the Right Mix

In my book (which just launched this week as an audiobook!!!), each exercise type is accompanied by photos, explanations, and demonstrations to guide you on your journey to improved mobility. Whether you're aiming for strength, endurance, flexibility, or coordination, the book will be your comprehensive resource.🏋️‍♂️🏃‍♀️🤸‍♂️
